[edit]DescriptionSnow Pit Sampling (5433413035).jpg |
On Dec. 9, 2010, Lora Koenig of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center used density cutters to collect 2-centimeter samples of snow all the way down the 2-meter pit. Samples are sent home in bags because snow near the surface is not bonded well enough to survive shipment in the form of a solid core. Isotopic signals are later extracted from the samples in order to attribute snowfall amounts to a specific year and season. The traverse was the first of two field campaigns to study snow accumulation on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and tie the information back to larger-scale data collected from satellites.
