English: Snagboat "Skagit" on the Snoqualmie River, ca. 1895 |

Description |
English: One of the duties of the United States Army Engineers, now the Corps of Engineers, has been to keep the nation's rivers open for navigation. They used specially-equipped steamboats called snagboats to remove logs, branches and other underwater hazards. In the 1880s and 1890s, the snagboat "Skagit" operated on the Snoqualmie and other rivers in the Puget Sound area.
This photo, probably taken in the 1890s, shows the sternwheeled snagboat "Skagit" on the Snoqualmie River in Washington State. In 1897, the hull of the "Skagit" was refitted and towed up to the beach at Skagway, Alaska, where it served as a store during the gold rush.
