Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Copious smoke from wildfires in Canada stretched from Hudson Bay to central Iowa on July 20, 2022. The heaviest pall covered Manitoba and Ontario, with a long river of smoke drifting southward across Minnesota and Iowa, thanks to winds from a gusty low-pressure system hanging over southern Ontario and the Great Lakes region.

On July 20, the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center reported 391 fires actively burning across Canada, with 195 of those listed as “uncontrolled”. In addition, FireSmoke Canada fire and smoke maps show heavy clusters of fire across northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) acquired this true-color image of smoke from fires in Canada drifting southward on July 20. Most of the smoke reaching the United States almost certainly originates from the fires in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. This image is a mosaic, created by data collected from two different passes of the instrument over the region. Each pass is a slightly different color.
