Summary
[edit]DescriptionSmaragdia viridis (emerald nerite snails) (modern).jpg |
English: Smaragdia viridis (Linnaeus, 1758) - emerald nerite snail shells
The gastropods (snails & slugs) are a group of molluscs that occupy marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. Most gastropods have a calcareous external shell (the snails). Some lack a shell completely, or have reduced internal shells (the slugs & sea slugs & pteropods). Most members of the Gastropoda are marine, and most of those are herbivores (algae grazers) or predators/carnivores. Smaragdia viridis is a small, beautifully green-colored nerite snail. It's an herbivorous, shallow-water species that inhabits seagrass beds - it actually consumes seagrass. The green coloration of the shell and soft parts allows the snail to blend in with its surroundings. Classification: Animalia, Mollusca, Gastropoda, Neritidae Locality: unrecorded (this species occurs in the Caribbean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea) See info. at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smaragdia_viridis and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smaragdia and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neritidae |
