Summary
[edit]DescriptionSmallest Prince Charles tartan, tileable.png |
English: "Smallest Prince Charles" tartan also known as "Prince Charles Edward Stewart - 1819" (spelled "Stewart" in this case). This is a "fashion" tartan designed by William Wilson & Son of Bannockburn in the 19th century; it is a variant of "Royal Stewart", with even less red than the "Prince Charles Edward Stuart" pattern. It keeps the even-sized thin overchecks of RS (PCES does not), but alters various of the other proportions subtly from RS, not just the red. This tartan is not to be confused with "small Stewart" or "small Stuart", another name for PCES. There's no evidence this pattern is used by Clan Stewart/Stuart. It dates to the 1819 Key Pattern Book of Wilsons.
This version of the image is in the "modern" (saturated) colour palette, and is exactly full-sett, and is tileable horizontally and vertically. Scottish Register of Tartans does not have this sett in their database. I got it from tartanologist Peter Eslea MacDonald in his role as the maintainer of the Scottish Tartans Authority database, who got it in turn from a surviving Wilsons pattern book. Like the others in this group of tartans, it is an asymmetrical, non-mirroring sett. STA-provided threadcount (normalized to standard tartan colours), in "..." notation: ...R32 B12 K18 Y4 K4 W4 K4 G26 R16 K4 R4 W4... |
