Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Small quarry near Ralphs Cross. This is maybe 500metres along the Westerdale road from Ralphs Cross.

A small quarry known locally as "blue shales". It most likely yielded mainly soft shale for maintaining the nearby road before it was surfaced in the mid 1900s. An icy day in November 2005. In 1968 a gas drilling project was undertaken on the moor just South of the quarry. Gas was found but there were problems with water in the strata.

However in 2006 we have seen a further exploration borehole drilled from the valley in Westerdale to investigate the same structures; gas was again found but still not viable to exploit for now.
