Summary
[edit]DescriptionSmall leaf lime trees - geograph.org.uk - 1189503.jpg |
English: Small leaf lime trees This is a rare sight for two reasons. Firstly, the trees are rare because they aren't known to self-seed in Britain although they might have done so in times of a warmer climate, as they do further south in Europe. Secondly this is a row of mature trees and for some reason we normally see only single trees or lengths of small leaf lime hedge about 5 or 6 metres long.
A great majority of mature trees in this area are found at the junctions of footpaths and tracks. Hence they might have been planted in prehistoric times to help long distance travellers to find their way. The row here lies beside a footpath which could have been an important long distance path. It passes a big Neolithic`burial chamber on top of the hill, usually known as Arthur's Stone. |
