Summary

[edit]
Description

Faulted sandstone in the Jurassic of Utah, USA.

Faults are fractures or fracture systems in rocks along which there has been differential displacement. Faults are produced by either extensional stress, compressional stress, or shear stress. Movement along faults is usually in the form of sudden jolts, which produces earthquakes.

Within Utah's Arches National Park, minor faults are abundant in certain places. Shown here is faulting in the Navajo Sandstone, an Early Jurassic sand dune deposit. Small-scale faults are common in this unit and appear to represent soft-sediment deformation structures involving slight collapse of dunes.
