Summary
[edit]DescriptionSmall Skipper feeding on a flowering plant - geograph.org.uk - 1408203.jpg |
English: Small Skipper feeding on a flowering plant. See also > 1408199. For a wider view of this location see > 1408173. The Small Skipper (Thymelicus sylvestris) is wide-spread in southern Britain where it can be found in rough grassland, on roadside verges, in woodland clearings and along woodland rides. Their main foodplant is Yorkshire-fog but other grasses are also used. Despite its name there are at least 4 skipper species that are smaller than the Small Skipper. The male is distinguished from the female by the sex brand on its forewings, which is a slightly curved line of specialised scent scales. The adults are active in late June, through July, and into August. Similar species are the Essex Skipper, the Large Skipper and the Lulworth Skipper. http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/index.php. Many thanks to Lynk https://www.geograph.org.uk/profile/811 for helping with identification. |
