Summary
[edit]DescriptionSmall Camas (14524923018).jpg | Camassia quamash. Family: Liliaceae (commonly known as the lily family). This liliaceous, perennial herb arises from an edible bulb and often resides in deep soil of moist to wet meadows and grasslands; from valleys to lower subalpine zones. Camas was and continues to be one of the most important "root" foods of western North American indigenous peoples, from southwestern British Columbia to Montana, and south to California. People traveled great distances to harvest the bulbs and there is some suggestion that plants were dispersed beyond their range by transplanting. |
