ct, after Mr. East arrivedin Pittsburg. The American landscape painter,Mr. Henry W. Ranger, likewise, by special in-vitation, contributed a large group. Someexcellent landscapes were also included in themain section of the exhibition. In portraits, numerically, the exhibition was notespecially strong, but the few which were shown wereof peculiar interest. In the first large gallery wereto be seen a clear-cut portrait by Miss CeciliaBeaux, of a Mother and Son, sculpturesque in itsstrong modelling and frank demarcation ofplanes ; Gari Melchers portrait of ex-PresidentRoosevelt in ridmg costume, a work just failingto attain greatness ; and John W. Alexandersmasterly portrait of Miss Helen Beatty, paintedin an exceedingly decorative and characteristicmanner. In the adjoining gallery an excellentportrait of Mrs. A. W.
