Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sluices at Cumberland Road, New Cut, Bristol Taken during a (rare) ferry trip up the Avon New Cut, this photograph reveals the sluice gates which lie beneath Cumberland Road, adjacent to the Harbour Master's offices (red brick buildings). These sluices control the flow of water between the Floating Harbour, a hundred metres to the north, and the New Cut itself. Without these outflow mechanisms, and the various lock gates operated from the Underfall Yard, Bristol Harbour as we see it could not exist.
