Map of the system in the Tatra trams fro Poprad t Stary Smokovec and Strbske Pleso. Connections with the cablecar at Tatranska Lomnica (and also standard gauge trains) and the steep cable railway from Stary Smokovec to Hrebeniok are also shown. Another electric railway connected Strba with Strbske Pleso (top left) but I can't fathom the trunkated blue box there. Perhaps you can ski down from there. Half way along the main line, the station of Svit which was started as a large industrial synthetic fibre making town by the Bata company during world war II, and whose name was adopted for the former Bata factory in the main manufacturing base of Zlin in Moravia after nationalisation. After 1990, np Svit again became Bata. The setting of Svit is quite dramatic, with modern factories in the same Le Corbusier inspired style, surrounded by the industrial town of sugar cube houses, with the high Tatra mountains as a backdrop. |
