English: Sleeves, 17th century
Description
English: Pair of sheer cotton rectangular sleeve pieces: "b" is slightly deeper than "a." Each has four rows of grouped slits outlined with fine whipped cord; delicately embroidered with black silk with butterflies in the spaces between the groups of slits, smaller insects on the bars between the slits themselves. Central area of sleeve-piece only filled with embroidery. Heavily sized; upper edge whipped; lower edge finely hemmed; sides with deeper border of coarser unsized cotton cloth, each with four small holes outlined with buttonhole stitch.
