Summary

[edit]
Description

Although the first capital of the United States of America was New York City when George Washington was inaugurated as the first President in 1789, the capital moved a year later to Philadelphia, where it would remain for the next decade or so while a new, planned city was being built to the south on the Potomac River (today's Washington, District of Columbia).

I am standing on the spot where the presidential residence stood; George Washington and John Adams used the residence as their official homes. In recent years, archaeologists uncovered the foundations of the residence, and turned the site into a memorial to the nine slaves that Washington owned, as well as the sad history of slavery in general in the US, and the struggle to end slavery.

This installation evokes the image of crate-like accommodations for the Africans who were packed into slave ships on their way to America. Inscriptions from key leaders are inside, while inscriptions in languages of the slaves' home tribal cultures are on the far wall. Slavery in the New World was often the price to pay for African tribes and nations that had lost a war to another tribe or nation; the winner would sell the losers off to European traders who would in turn bring them to the New World to perform badly needed labor.
