Summary

[edit]
Description

Slaughterhouse Beach is a small hidden beach in Mokuleia Bay, in the northwest part of West Maui. It’s on Honoapiilani Highway (Highway 30), between Mile Markers 32 and 33, a mile or two north of Kapalua, and immediately south of Honolua Bay.

This picturesque beach is at the bottom of a steep cliff, which is covered with heavy vegetation. There is a small parking lot at the top of the cliff, where you can look down and get a glimpse of the beach. Then there’s a long steep concrete stairway with distinctive green handrails, that leads you 88 stairs down to a short rocky pathway, heading to the beach.

The scenery at Slaughterhouse Beach is especially beautiful in the afternoon on a sunny day, with the blue ocean bordered on both sides by cliffs covered in greenery. (In the morning, the beach is in the shade.) There are big waves in this bay, crashing up to the beach. Though not known as a Maui surfing beach, it’s still fun for experienced bodyboarders.

The beach is sandy, unlike the rocky Honolua Bay beach next door. These two bays together make up the Honolua-Mokuleia Bay Marine Life Conservation District. I would not advise snorkeling here at Slaughterhouse because of the rough waves. Even swimming can be dangerous when the waves are active, especially in the winter. There are no lifeguards and no restrooms
