Summary

[edit]
Description
English: 1 May 2008. Nearly Equivalent VIII, Chesnut Estate, Tottenham.

A deeply embarrassing moment. I took a hurried photo while delivering leaflets on Election Day for the London Assembly. Then reported what seemed to be a pile of dumped paving slabs.

It turned out this was an outdoor sculpture by Tottenham artist Bagsy. Part of the uncurated and unattended Bring Art to an Alley Near You exhibition in the Tottenham Virtual Cultural Quarter.

Even more embarrassing, at the time I knew little about Bagsy. Although we've all seen his pieces around the streets of Tottenham.

About Bagsy

Who is this enigmatic and reclusive figure? I've tried to find out.

Bagsy, his closest associates, and his stupendously rich agent are unwilling to share more than the barest information.

A Tottenham resident, it seems that Bagsy has travelled widely. He claims that when he was living in New York, collectors would regularly fill-up entire trucks with his pieces. All of which were displayed in a vast outdoor sculpture park..

He is, it seems, around 88 or 89 years old. But despite many decades of superb physical fitness from climbing ladders and scaling buildings at night, on this occasion Bagsy decided that lugging four-and-a-half heavy slabs was enough to make the artistic point. (Plus the fact that the other 115½ slabs had been stolen from the back of his motorbike.)
