| Description |
A bit of sun finds a sidewalk café. (As usual, I was having a grilled sandwich.) A brand new skyscraper with an ostentatious name across the corner has cut back on the sun. The newer tower visible here has, unlike too many of its contemporaries, a distinctive stairstep form, acute angle, and "funny hat" peak -- a snarky architect might call its retardataire form a dunce cap -- that fans would be able to recognize from any other perspective. The truly astute will notice that (surprisingly) something other than parking occupies the lower floors of the nearer tower, and Illy coffee's characteristic red umbrellas. Of course this is the Near North Side; both cross streets are named after bodies of water named after American Indian tribes -- and only one north-south street qualifies, as most of the rest bear French or English settlers' names. |
