DescriptionSkye crofter QE1 146.jpg | "A SKYE CROFTER'S HOME. "Over the Sea to Skye" is a voyage which, in these days of excursion steamers and highly-developed Scottish traffic, is yearly undertaken by an increasing number of travellers. To those who have visited the barren but interesting island, the rude stone cabins, of which our illustration furnishes an example, must be familiar. It is a hard life at the best which these islanders live, and the competition of the great world is rapidly making it harder, as the demand for the scanty produce of the Croft grows less and less. Of late years, the Highland Crofter who, like the small farmer of the West of Ireland, is more or less a pure Celt, has been made the object of special legislation, and learned and powerful Commissions have been appointed for the purpose of solving the problem of how something may be made out of nothing on his estate. A recourse to public funds has postponed, but cannot remove, the chronic difficulty." | |||
