es inorder to reach the Cabane de Valsorey, they foundthemselves compelled to return to the Cabane dePanossiere, and thence crossed the ridge at Mulcts dela Liaz. The descent on the face looking towardsChanrion was extremely trying. They had to carrytheir ski. Anatole Pellaud, of Martigny, whoaccompanied them, actually lost his pair, and camehome along the Vallee de Bagnes, while the othersspent the night in the wretched huts of la PetiteChermontane. The following day was spent inlounging about the Cabane de Chanrion. Then theywent on to Arolla by the Mont Eouge, Seilon, andRiedmatten passes. At Arolla they slept in a barn, and next day ascended to the Cabane de Bertol. Thelast day in this uncomfortable pilgrimage was takenup in crossing the Col dHerens, ascending the Tetede Valpelline, and descending to Zermatt (see Alpina1903, p. 207, and following: Erste Durchquerung derWalliseralpen). Baujard (from Paris), with JosephRavanel, le Rouge, and E. D. Ravanel. Alreadyon the first day this party got off the bee-line. Theywent down to Chable along the Col des Montets andthe Col de Forclaz, then to Chanrion. On the thirdday they left Chanrion at midnight, and got toZermatt at 6.30 in the evening, having crossed theCol de IEveque, Col du Mt. Brule, and the Col deValpelline (see Bevue Alpine^ 1908, p. 80). As one sees, these three expeditions partlyfollowed, or cut across, the high-level route. So faras the first three passes are concerned (those ofArgentiere, of Planards, and of Sonadon), they leftthem completely on one side. They were right inleaving the first. The best and only rational courseis to traverse this part of the Mont Blanc range by theCol du Chardonnet, or the Col du Tour and Orny.Indeed, the Col dArgentiere, on
