La rivière Saint-Charles vue d’au-dessus de la porte Saint-Jean en 1836
« À la veille des rébellions de 1837-1838, un complexe système défensif enserre la ville de Québec. L’aquarelle illustre bien, au premier plan, les éléments des défenses du bastion Saint-Jean: le fossé, la contrescarpe, le chemin couvert et le glacis. En bordure du glacis s’élèvent des maisons du faubourg Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Parmi celles-ci, remarquons l’imposant édifice et son clocheton central. C’est l’Asile des orphelins, fondé en 1831 par la Société charitable des dames catholiques de Québec. Incendié en 1845, l’asile sera reconstruit dans la rue Saint-Olivier, en 1849. Il sera le berceau de l’œuvre des Sœurs de la Charité à Québec. Plus loin, nous découvrons le quartier Saint-Roch et les méandres de la rivière Saint-Charles. Nous pouvons distinguer le pont Dorchester, construit en 1821. » – Marc Beaudoin - Société historique de Québec
