Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Watercolor and gouache over lithographic line, on paper. Inscribed: J. B. A. / Impie Litographique de C. Motte Rue des Marais No. 13. Numbered: 19. Dimensions: 67.4cm. by 50.8cm.

To be executed in gilt bronze; silvered metal dial.

The deity, winged and in a tunic, stands aside a lyre-topped altar of Love with the clock dial in the flower-decorated front, his bow, quiver and laurel crown to the other side, the frieze with garlanded torches within circlets, flanking Cupid crouching on an altar of love.

Although one of the lesser gods in Ancient mythology, Cupid (Latin: Amor; Greek: Eros) was frequently depicted in Renaissance and later art, often to signify that the subject or theme depicted was one of love. His attributes are the bow, arrow and quiver; the lyre is an attribute of Apollo (see cat. #26) in his role as patron of poetry, music and leader of the Muses, the gods of the performing arts; the rose in Antiquity was sacred to Venus, the goddess of Love – the pricks from its thorns representing the wounds of Love, which is fired by Cupid’s arrows. This design is thus a paean to Love and love poetry.
