Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A sketch of the psychiatrist Jacques-Joseph Moreau de Tours playing the piano in a Turkish costume, made by Théophile Gautier in 1845, under the influence of hashish. Gautier depicted his chromesthetic perceptions over the piano as lines of color arising from the music. He was introduced to the drug by Moreau, who conducted experiments at the Hashish Club in Paris, and wrote “Du hachisch et de l’alienation mentale (Hashish and Mental Illness)” in 1845.
