Summary
[edit]DescriptionSkeith stone - geograph.org.uk - 1691644.jpg |
English: Skeith stone This is the south face of the stone which bears an incised double ringed wheel design with eight petal shaped spokes averaging 13ins long. This design resembles one on a monument in Bressay, Shetland. On the other side are only rough vertical striations. Little is known about this standing stone, although it is assumed to be Pictish. It is a roughly rectangular sandstone boulder about 3ft 8ins high, 3ft 4ins wide and averages 1ft thick. Until the 1930s its main axis used to run NNW-SSE but it has been moved more than once and, since the 1960s at least, it is now oriented closer to E-W. Excavations have revealed no sign of interment under the Skeith stone and its original purpose remains a mystery. |
