Summary
[edit]DescriptionSkamby gravfält 6.JPG |
English: Skamby gravfält – One of Östergötlands most remarkable burial grounds is located on a hill in Skamby, Kuddby parish, in Norrköping Municipality. There are 20 visible flat barrows and a number of cup-marks in the flat rocks in the field. It is the 10 oval barrows that are remarkable. They have a large hollow in the central part which may indicate that they originally wooden sepulchral chambers which collapsed once the wood had rotted. Similar graves have been examined and shown to be burial ships in which the deceased was placed. These were graves of a high status and therefore it may be assumed that there was a village in Skamby in the vicinity perhaps with a chieftain family. A boat grave in Skamby was excavated in 2005 which found among other amber pieces to a board game. The boat had been 5-6 meter long. Other traces of the man, who lived in the 900s AD, the middle of the Viking Age, were tooth enamel, a red glass bead, a whetstone of slate and a small belt knife. |
