A similar picture is located in A field guide to wildflowers: Northeastern and North-central North America By Roger Tory Peterson, Margaret McKenny an is identified as a Cocklebur beach clotbur sea burdock and the closest species appears to be the Xanthium echinatum or the Xanthium strumarium as in the reference book Summer & Fall Wildflowers of New England By Marilyn J.
