orth wall of the outer apart-ment, access to the inner chambers being gained from it by doorwaysformed in the division walls. The cloister-garth is practically squarein form, measuring 91 feet 2 inches by 90 feet 1 inch. It seemsprobable that at least the east side of the cloister-walk was coveredwith a stone vault, as fragments of two springers survive, one oneach side of the west doorway of the chapter-house, and a third issituated a few feet to the south of the entrance to the parlour.Instead of resting upon a corbel or on the capital of a vaulting-shaft,the groined ribs have been tapered to a single point where they springfrom the wall face. This is undoubtedly a late feature, probablydating from the 15th century. Several moulded corbels remain inthe upper portions of the east and west walls which have evidentlysupported the outer timber roof of the cloister-walk. The gatehouse, situated to the south-west of the abbey buildings Ancient and Historical Monuments—County of Berwick.
