IOO £00 H IfEEJ village of Leitholm, and some 150 yards west of Belchester House,at an elevation of about 250 feet above sea-level, are the remains inventory of monuments, etc., in county of berwick. 79 Parish of Eccles. of a large oval fort (fig. 75). Its site is a plateau, whence theground falls sharply away towards the north-west. The defencesremain for about one-half of the periphery, and consist of adeep trench measuring about 44 feet across. The ramparts havebeen entirely obliterated, as also has the ditch on the north andnorth-west. O.S.M., Bee., xxviii. NE. Visited 23rd October 1908. 142. Gross, Crosshall.—Situated about \ mile south-west of Cross-hall farm, at the roadside and opposite to a row of farm cottages,stands a tall wheel-headed cross (fig. 77). It is a monolith insertedinto a built stone base with a central socket stone, the whole risingto a height of 14 feet 10 inches above the ground level. The shaft,which is a rectangular oblong in section, has a slight taper upwardstowards the circular head which measures 1 foot 10 inches in diameter.On both sides of the head a plain equal-armed cross is cut in lowrelief within a marginal border.
