To face p. 23. inventory of monuments, etc., in county of berwick. 23 Parish of Cockburnspath. the wall immediately above the exterior of the south-eastern doorwayis the pointed arch-head of a two-light window containing tracery ofthe cusped geometrical type within a moulded label. The detailsindicate that a church existed on the present site in the 14thand 15 th centuries, which in its turn probably succeeded a stillearlier building. The tower (fig. 18), situated in the middle of thewest gable, is the most interesting feature now remaining. Itmeasures some 9 feet in diameter within walls averaging 1 foot6 inches in thickness, and contains a wheel-staircase of stone. Thetotal height measured from the level of the church floor to the uppercoping is about 30 feet.
