A significant event of the year was the refusal of theBoston authorities to allow Webster to speak in FanueilHall because of his attitude on the Compromises.Hitherto Boston had been slow to sympathize with theanti-slavery sentiment, and many men of high so-cial standing were ostracized for agreeing with Will-iam Lloyd Garrison. But now the situation waschanged. When a runaway slave who had longlived in Boston was seized to be returned to sla-very, a mass meeting was held in Fanueil Hall,and the speech of Charles Sumner on that occa-sion against ihe fugitive slave law presently madehim a United States Senator. The visit of Louis Kossuth, theHungarian patriot, in 1851-52, roused the country to afurore of enthusiasm such as it had not felt since Lafay-ettes famous triumphal procession through the States.Kossuth had failed to free Hungary because of foreignintervention, and he came to this country almost anofficial guest. His ulterior motive was to get materialaid to renew his efiforts in Hungary, but he kept this fora long time in the background.
