Six Harmonies Pagoda: On the shore of Chien dong River. Description: An aerial shot of a river and its bank. A pagoda looms up on a hill and smaller buildings are below it. Notes: It protects the city from the dragon which inhabits the river and produces the famous Hangchow bore. This tidal wave advances in a seething wall from the mouth of the bay, twenty miles away, as far as Hangchow. Restored in 1894 at a cost of $175,000. Since its restoration, the city has been visited by neither flood nor great fire. (Album: Eugene A. Turner, Jr. Hangchow, China 1913-1925) |
