but the mind of thebeholder can relax its strain, and fall into a mood ofpassive receptivity in which the beauty of form has itsfull effect. To many the monotony of Polyclitus mayseem at first uninteresting ; his work, so far as wecan judge it from extant copies, has neither the en-nobling ideals or ethical conception of Polygnotus andPhidias, nor the subtle characterisation and psychologicalinterest of the masters of the fourth century. But noone who will resign himself for a time to the contem-plation of a Polyclitan statue can fail to find in it thatrestful harmony and self-contained perfection that are,perhaps, the most characteristic qualities of Greeksculpture. I If the monotony of Polyclitus is to some extent borneout by our evidence as to the Doryphorus, a greatsurprise awaits us when we come to consider his otherfamous athletic statue, the Diadumenus; for the extantcopies of this work vary among themselves in a re-markable way, and it is by no means easy to decide Plate XXXV
