examine the Alexander more in detail, we find in ita curious combination of characteristics that we havealready noticed in other works attributed to masters offourth-century sculpture. The eyes set in deep attheir inner corners remind us of the Agias; but they arealso overshadowed at their outer corners by the heavyroll of flesh, curving beneath the brow, which wenoticed in the Tegean heads of Scopas. This form ofbrow may, however, have been a personal peculiarityof Alexander, for we see it strongly indicated in hisportrait on coins.1 With the upturned gaze and thedelicate rendering of the lower eyelid, it gives just thatimpression of power combined with passionate sensi-bility which is recorded as peculiar to the portrait byLysippus. The mouth is full, with a hint of sensualityand even of cruelty; but the whole expression of theface is that of a generous if unbridled nature; thoughhis weaknesses are not altogether concealed—as in thel Set P.
