Summary
[edit]DescriptionSite of Hesleden Railway Station, 17-06-2020.jpg |
English: View West of the Hart-Haswell Walkway passing through the site of Hesleden Railway Station.
The photographer is believed to be stood close to the eastern end of the station platform although nothing remains of it and much of the site has since been re-landscaped to produce a wetland pond (right). The publisher is unaware of exactly when the station opened but it is known that it was a stop on the route of the Hartlepool Dock & Railway Co. line of 1835 which was later linked to other contemporary lines to form the North Eastern Railway's inland West Hartlepool to Sunderland via Haswell and West Hartlepool to Ferryhill Lines. Contemporary maps suggest that the station consisted of an island platform with a small booking office/ waiting room on it and a footbridge linking it to the village above the cutting; there was a freight bypass line and likely goods siding north of the station's up (eastbound) platform. The station lost its passenger service in 1952 but is believed to have remained open to goods until 1966 and a single line through it was retained until around 1984. |
