Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Site of 42-43 Bayley Lane. Landscaping between Bayley Lane and the extension to the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum makes unusual use of steel 1800534. It is formulated to corrode in a controlled way. Here, a series of vertical steel slabs are perforated with laser-cut inscriptions that record the occupants of buildings on the site. This one reads:

1410 William Eton 1565 Edmund Brownill draper, mayor, sheriff, MP 1655 Henry Davenport cleric 1731 First Provident Dispensary 1756 Weavers Arms public house 1869 Clarendon Arms 1939 Whitman and Sons Ltd plumbers + decorators 1940 Destroyed by the Blitz

Compare 866596. Nearly two years on and the steel has corroded, as it is designed to do, harmonising now with the pink-brown Coventry sandstone and Victorian brick of neighbouring buildings.
