Summary

[edit]
Description

Sisters Ada and Minna Everleigh opened the Everleigh Club on this spot on 1910. It was called the most luxurious house of prostitution in the country. Silk curtains, damask easy chairs, oriental rugs, mahogany tables, gold rimmed china, silver dinner ware, perfumed fountains in every room, a $15,000 gold-leafed piano, mirrored ceilings, a library, an art gallery featuring nudes in gold frames—no expense was spared. The brothel was so popular that they had to screen clients before they could visit one of the "Everleigh Butterflies" as the prostitutes were called. Many were turned away.

For $20,000 a month they bought protection from aldermen "Bathhouse" John Coughlin and Michael "Hinky-Dink" Kenna. State legislators were always entertained for free.

In 1902, Prince Henry of Prussia visited the Club. During a dance, a prostitute's slipper came off and spilled champagne. One of the prince's entourage drank the champagne, thus the tradition of drinking champagne from a woman's shoe was born.

In response to a 1911 vice report that there were nearly 600 houses of ill repute in the city, Mayor Carter Harrison, Jr. ordered the club shut down. The sisters happily retired with a million in cash and eventually settled in New York. The Club was razed in 1933.
