Title
Sir John Alexander Cockburn, Premier
Description

John Cockburn, MD, (1850-1929) was a Scottish-born immigrant to South Australia who practised medicine in Jamestown and then turned to politics, initially in local government and then in the colonial legislature. He served in several ministries in the 1880s and 1890s and was briefly Premier in 1889-90. His politics were those of an 'advanced liberal'; he was too radical for some but too conservative for others. Strongly committed to Federation, he was elected as a delegate to the Australasion Federation in 1890 and Federal Convention in 1897-98. After being South Australia's Agent-General in London, he reluctantly retired from Australian politics in 1901 and remained in England until his death in 1920. He was knighted in 1900. The portrait has been dated by the State Library of SA (B3681) as c1895.
