Nederlands: Detail van een foto gemaakt in het Sinti-woonwagenkamp in Brunssum, Limburg, in 1935. Te zien zijn o.a. diverse leden van de familie Steinbach. Het meisje met een kleuter op haar arm is Elisabeth Steinbach met haar zusje Settela. Laatstgenoemde is bekend geworden als het iconische "meisje met de hoofddoek". Ze is te zien op een zeven seconden durend fragment uit de Westerborkfilm van de Joodse kampgevangene en cineast Werner Rudolf Breslauer. Breslauer filmde haar op 19 mei 1944 toen ze vanuit de wagon op weg naar Auschwitz door de deuropening een laatste blik op Kamp Westerbork wierp. Lange tijd werd aangenomen dat het een joods meisje betrof, maar in 1994 bleek dat het om het Sinti-meisje Settela Steinbach ging. Ze werd samen met haar moeder en broertjes en zusjes kort na aankomst in Auschwitz vergast. Collectie Limburgs Museum, Venlo. |
