Summary
[edit]DescriptionSint-Niklaas, East-Flanders, Belgium 10.jpg |
English: Sint-Niklaas is a (never walled) city in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The city is also known for its ‘grand place’ the largest in Belgium. The history of Sint-Niklaas begins in 1217 with the foundation of the Sint-Nicolaas Church (patron saint Nicholas of Myra). Over the years, the textile and knitting industry flourished (especially during the 19th century). Success of this industry led to the recruitment of many workers and wealthy bourgeoisie. The beautiful houses (art-deco style) of the latter are still the silent witnesses of that time, as well as the old facades of former small shops. The construction of a large shopping centre (a mall) on the outskirts of the city had a major impact on the middle class, resulting in vacancy. Recently, the renovation of the Grand Place and the Station square, among others, brought about some positive changes. Some of the many places of interest: the St. Nicholas Church, the town hall on the Grand Place, the Romain de Vidtspark with Walburg Castle, the Cipierage (former prison), the Puitvoetbos, the Mercator Museum, and many others. Detail: you will also find nice murals.
