This is a representation of the Burning Bush; which, in Easten Othodox theology is a prefigration of the Virgin Birth--hence, the Virgin Mary is shown in the center of the flames. St. John Climacus wrote the Ladder of Divine Ascent at St. Catherine's Monastery, Sinai, the site of the burning bush.MishaPan (talk) 17:08, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Monks beginning to ascend the ladder of the spiritual life. The imagery of the ladder comes from Jacob's Ladder in the Old Testament. The ladder has 30 rungs or "steps", corresponding to the number of chapters in St. John Climacus' book The Ladder of Divine Ascent. MishaPan (talk) 17:19, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
