Description
English: Top right ; oval silver brooch with engraved scene of Dungeness Lighthouse hallmarked Birmingham 1893

43mm wide x 34mm high Inventory number :HARGM : 709

Middle ; Oval silver openwork brooch, engraved with an image of Bedford Church and the words, 'BEDFORD CHURCH'. Hallmarked on reverse: lion passant / anchor [Birmingham] / date letter 'r' [1916-17] / maker's mark 'J.W.T' for J. W. Tiptaft & Son Ltd. 1916 43mm wide x 33mm high Inventory number :HARGM : 940

This brooch was made by J.W. Tiptaft & Son Ltd which was founded in 1882 by James Waler Tiptaft who went into partnership in 1909 with his son Norman. At first their premises were in one room in Vyse Street, but they later moved to a larger factory in the Holyhead Road, Handsworth, and finally to premises in St Paul's Square Birmingham. The business was finally sold to Blanckensee [see HARGM 589], just before the Second World War. J. Banister, Silversmiths of Birmingham and Their Marks: 1750-1980 (London, 1981)p.316

Bottom right ; Circular silver openwork brooch depicting York Minster. Hallmarked on reverse: lion passant / anchor [Birmingham] / date letter 'h' [1882] / 'SB & S' in rounded rectangular cartouche (twice) for S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd. 41mm diameter. Inventory number :HARGM : 589

This brooch was made by S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd., a large jewellery manufacturer based in Birmingham. The company was founded in 1826 and it initially specialised in jewellery but later manufactured silver and silver-plated goods.

Silverware manufacturing was carried out at 73 Great Hampton Street, Birmingham, which continued until the end of the Second World War, when it was purchased by E. Podolsky who ran the firm as the Albion Chain Company Ltd. (now Albioncraft Ltd).
