[edit]DescriptionSilikonschaum mischung 008.png |
English: One of 14 pictures illustrating mixing of components A and B as well as the mixing of both components to result in finished silicone foam – an exothermic reaction. Attention: workplace safety via adequate venting of the workspace. This experiment was done outdoors. As a result of mixing both components, the rubber vulcanises (turns from liquid to solid) and results in the evolving of hydrogen gas, which is responsible for creating gas-filled bubbles inside the rubber. When used as a firestop, the foam then remains inside of openings as a result of outward pressure from the gas bubbles towards the rubber in the opening (insofar as permanent forms may not be in place to do so). According to the US federal department USNRC, the gases, which are solely responsible for the pressure, which is holding the silicone foam firestop in place, can escape over time, thus lowering the pressure and the hold of the silicone foam firestop inside of the opening (unless permanent forms are in place to accomplish this task). It is, therefore, sound practice, for ageing test regimes to consider the pressure exerted by the material over time.
