[edit]DescriptionSikorsky JRS-1 ‘1-J-1’ (Bu.1063).jpg |
English: c/n 4346
Built in 1938 for the US Navy with the Bureau No 1063. Based at Naval Air Station San Diego until July 1940, when she was transferred to Pearl Harbour and stationed at Naval Air Station Ford Island. She was at Pearl Harbour on 7th December 1941, one of only two surviving aircraft that can make that claim, the other being the Collings Foundations Curtiss P-40B Tomahawk. After the 7th December attack, 1063 was sent out on patrol missions to search for the enemy fleet and submarines. She returned to the United States in September 1942 and was overhauled before being allocated to Moffett Field, California. Taken out of service in August 1944, she was stored for museum use and officially transferred to the Smithsonian Institute in 1960. She was stored outside at Silver Hill, Maryland, for many years but moved to the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar in 2011. She is seen on display in an unrestored but original condition at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center, as part of the National Air and Space Museum.
