Summary
[edit]DescriptionSikh Empire Flag carried by the cavalry of General Hari Singh Nalwa, c. 1835 01.jpg |
English: Hari Singh Nalwa was born in Gujranwala, the hometown of Maharaja Ranjit Singh – the founder of the Sikh Empire. Nalwa was a senior general and the one Ranjit Singh was most attached to, given his bravery and accomplishments in defeating Turks and Afghan invasions in Peshwar, Kashmir and Hazara.
This shows a part of a painting of Hari Singh Nalwa leading his cavalry – and one camel mounted soldier – from atop an elephant. It is notable for the two flags, one of which looks plain and the other features the goddess Kali charging with a sword. We do not know what was on the other side of these flags. The painting is also notable for the turban (pagadi) worn by the soldiers, a part of dress of Sikh faith. Medium: Gouache heightened with gold Artist: Family workshop of Abdullah, Punjab (Pakistan) Last known owner: Toor Collection This is a photograph of a 2-D 1835 CE painting.
