Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Signs of the times in Fournier Street The street runs between Commercial Street and Brick Lane with Christ Church at the western end - hence its original name of Church Street. Between 1670 to 1710, up to 50,000 Huguenots sought refuge from religious persecution in England, many settling in Spitalfields, where food and housing were cheap, and there was more freedom from the economic controls of the guilds. This street housed many, plying their trade as weavers. It was renamed after one of them, George Fournier. Next came the Jews and then the Bangladeshi, hence the street name in Bengali. Contemporary notices relating to security measures and redevelopment are characteristic of the area as it now climbs upmarket.
