Summary

[edit]
Description Signs of recent activity on one of the mud volcanoes near Gobustan. Being natural phenomena, no two mud volcanoes were alike. Their appearance varied from tiny spouts bubbling with a lot of water, some large double spouts bubbling away with the mud inside the consistence of slurry to more double spouts which had died and where the mud was drying into a sludge to mere harmless looking trickles like this one. My guide Ibrahim informed me that the mud apparently has cosmetic properties and some locals collect it for the purpose. Luckly, nature has been left undisturbed and there was no industry (or tourist stalls) built around them! Maybe because it was hazardous terrain. (Gobustan, Azerbaijan, Sept. 2017)
