Summary
[edit]DescriptionSignal box, Kyle of Lochalsh - geograph.org.uk - 1590922.jpg |
English: Signal box, Kyle of Lochalsh. The Friends of the Kyle Line is currently trying to raise money and awareness in order that they might restore Kyle Signal Box to its former glory. The box still contains the original signal and point switching.
Nigel Brown has submitted a similar view of the signal box taken in 2003 626736. The 63 miles of railway from Dingwall to Kyle of Lochalsh was opened 2 November, 1897, although the initial section from Dingwall to Stromeferry was opened 19 August 1870. The final difficult section took so long to get approval to build because ultimately the engineers (and workers) had to construct 29 bridges, cut through 31 sections of solid rock at an average cost of £20,000 (UK pounds) per mile. In 1893 the Stromeferry to Kyle project began and took over 80 'navvies' nearly 4 years to complete. (Information from http://www.kylerailway.co.uk/ ). |
