Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sign on Bridge Mills. This plate, high on the gable of the mill (see 602584 ), can still just be deciphered. It has clearly carried two different messages at various times. The one that appears to be original reads

"F.B.CLARKE Card Puncher" This would be a typical occupant of a tenant mill like this, not actually making fabrics, but directly connected with the lace trade. In this case the Card Puncher refers to the manufacturer of the punched cards which were used in the looms making the machine lace for which the Nottingham area was famous. These Jacquard cards set the looms to automatically weave the intricate patterns of the lace, and were the direct ancestorss of the punched cards used in computers of the 1950s and 60s. At a later stage, the name was painted out, and the plate then simply read "BRIDGE MILLS

LONG EATON"
