Notes Autographed sign from Sergeant's Mess, Narrow Neck Camp presented to Temporary Warrant Officer 1st Class 801248 Thomas Roberts. Thomas Roberts spent nearly four years in the Army during WW1, serving with the Otago Mounted Rifles in Egypt and later with the NZMG Coy. He signed up again in 1940, Army No 801248. At this time he was married with two children and was considered too old to serve overseas but spent another 4 years and 45 days in service achieving the rank of Temporary Warrant Officer 1st Class while serving as a Machine Gun Instructor at Narrow Neck Camp Auckland. While there Thomas Roberts also served as Mess President of the Sergeant's Mess. This sign, signed by T Roberts, Mess Pres. is autographed by members of the Mess and was probably given to Roberts at the time of his discharge, 15 July 1944. In 1950, when applying for his war medals (the War Medal 1939-45 and the NZ War Service Medal) Thomas gave his address as 46 Grosvenor Street, Grey Lynn, which was probably also the family home during the war years.
