Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This is severe form of achalasia (Sigmoid esophagus) where the esophagus was dilated to more than 10cm .The mucosa of the esophagus can be recognised by its pearly white colour and the gastroesphageal junction is seen as a rather sharp line and the gastric mucosa is seen inferiorly. The wall of esophagus was thickened and mucosa hyperplastic. Achalasia is a very rare and sigmoid esophagus much rarer. Achalasia occurs due to destruction of the ganglion cells in myentric plexus as a result of which the lower esophageal sphincter fails to relax ,which is also compounded by decreased motility of lower esophagus resulting in stasis of food and failure to propel food effectively to stomach, which causes progressive dilation of lower esophagus.
